Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Diclectin is a prescription medication formulated with doxylamine succinate and pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), specifically indicated for the management of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy (NVP). As the only medication in Canada approved for this indication, Diclectin is widely recommended as a first-line therapy for morning sickness. Its delayed-release formulation ensures sustained symptom relief over time, improving maternal comfort without compromising fetal safety. Diclectin is designed to be taken prophylactically, offering continuous therapeutic coverage and reducing the severity and frequency of NVP episodes.

Diclectin should be taken on a regular daily schedule, not on an as-needed basis. The standard starting dose is two tablets at bedtime. Depending on symptom severity and clinical response, the dose may be increased under medical supervision to a maximum of four tablets per day: one in the morning, one in the mid-afternoon, and two at bedtime. Tablets should be swallowed whole and not crushed or chewed, as they are formulated for delayed release. Patients should follow their healthcare provider's dosage instructions carefully for optimal control of symptoms.
Each Diclectin tablet contains 10 mg of doxylamine succinate and 10 mg of pyridoxine hydrochloride as active ingredients. Inactive ingredients include microcrystalline cellulose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, talc, and a delayed-release coating.
Diclectin is contraindicated in individuals who are hypersensitive to doxylamine succinate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, other ethanolamine derivatives, or any of the tablet’s components. It should not be used by patients with monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) therapy, angle-closure glaucoma, stenosing peptic ulcer, or pyloroduodenal obstruction. Patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the excipients should also avoid this product.
Use of Diclectin should be approached cautiously in patients with conditions that may be exacerbated by anticholinergic effects, such as asthma, increased intraocular pressure, or urinary retention. As Diclectin may cause drowsiness, activities requiring mental alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machinery, should be avoided. Concurrent use of other central nervous system depressants or alcohol may enhance sedative effects. Although studies support its safety in pregnancy, the medication should only be used under medical advice, particularly in patients with severe NVP requiring individualized care.
Common side effects may include:
Less commonly, hypersensitivity reactions may occur. If patients experience difficulty breathing, rash, or swelling, medical attention should be sought immediately.
