What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Diacomit (stiripentol) is a medication prescribed for the treatment of seizures associated with Dravet syndrome in patients who are:

  • 6+ months old
  • weigh 7+ kg
  • receiving clobazam

Diacomit 250 mg and 500 mg suspension and capsules are available for oral administration.

Directions

Diacomit should be taken as directed by the prescribing doctor, who will determine a Diacomit dosage that’s appropriate for you or your child.

Avoid breaking or opening the capsules; they should be swallowed whole with a full glass of water; take them during a meal.

Mix the powder for oral suspension in a glass of water then take immediately with a meal.

Diacomit capsules and oral suspension should be kept dry at temperatures between 20oC and 25oC (68oF and 77oF). Protect from light. Keep away from children.

Ingredients

Stiripentol is the active ingredient in Diacomit.

Erythrosine (250 mg capsule only), gelatin, indigotine (250 mg capsule only), magnesium stearate, povidone, sodium starch glycolate, and titanium dioxide are the inactive ingredients in the capsules.

Aspartame, carmellose sodium, erythrosine, glucose, hydroxyethylcellulose, povidone, sodium starch glycolate, sorbitol, titanium dioxide, and fruit flavor (acacia, Bergamot oil, hypromellose, maltodextrin, sorbitol, and vanillin) are the inactive ingredients in the oral suspension.

Contraindications

Diacomit does not have any contraindications per the most recent Prescribing Information.

Cautions

  • Talk to a doctor about the following prior to you or your child beginning Diacomit therapy:
    • All the medications you or your child takes, including prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and supplements
    • Allergies that you or your child has
    • Any health problems that you or child has
    • Your or your child’s past medical history
    • If you or your child is pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Diacomit contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Excessive sleepiness or drowsiness
    • Loss of weight and appetite
    • Neutrophil and platelet counts that are lower than normal
    • Increased seizure frequency and status epilepticus risk if the medication is stopped all of a sudden; Diacomit should be gradually withdrawn
    • Phenylalanine, which may pose risks in patients with phenylketonuria, is found in Diacomit oral suspension
    • Suicidal ideation and behavior

Side Effects

Diacomit side effects include but are not limited to excessive sleepiness or drowsiness, loss of weight, loss of appetite, agitation, impaired coordination, muscle tone reduction, nausea, tremor, slurred speech, and sleep disorder.
