What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Desyrel is a prescription antidepressant medication that is used to treat depression and aim specifically to improve mood, appetite, and energy levels. Desyrel for sleep and anxiety are common too, with depression often being accompanied by insomnia and being overly anxious. Serotonin is the brain neurotransmitter most related to mood and feelings of happiness. Desyrel works by promoting more serotonin remaining in the brain, and this is how it balances mood and is a good medication for treating depression.

Directions

Desyrel is usually taken once or twice daily, depending on how it is indicated for use in your prescription. This medication is best taken with food, and if drowsiness is a problem you should take it shortly before your bedtime.

Your doctor may increase your dose based on your response to this antidepressant medication, and many people who begin on a therapeutic dose two times per day can move to one time per day once they have depression under control.

Do not exceed maximum dosage regulation of two times per day. If medication is ineffective for you then it is best to consult with a doctor again as there are many antidepressant medication alternatives available.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Desyrel is Trazodone.

Cautions

Tell your doctor if you have any history of bipolar disorder, suicide attempts, heat disease or heart attack, liver disease, kidney disease, blood pressure problems, or closed-angle glaucoma before starting on Desyrel.

Medication may make some people drowsy. If this occurs to you it is best to avoid driving or operating heavy machinery temporarily.

Trazodone may cause a heart rhythm condition called QT prolongation, and this is why this medication may not be suitable for people with heart health concerns. Low potassium levels in the blood can increase the risk of QT prolongation.

Interactions

There is the possibility of drug interaction risks between Desyrel and other Rx medications, including Hushart, MAO inhibitors like isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, tranylcypromine and others, azole antifungals like itraconazole and ketoconazole, HIV protease inhibitors like ritonavir and indinavir, macrolide antibiotics like erythromycin, rifamycins like rifampin, anti-seizure drugs like phenytoin, anxiety and sleep drugs like alprazolam, diazepam, and zolpidem, muscle relaxants, and opioid pain relievers like codeine. Inform your doctor of all medications you are currently taking before receiving a prescription and proceeding to buy Desyrel.

Side Effects

Desyrel side effects are uncommon, but some users may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, weight changes, blurred vision, muscle ache or pain, dry mouth, stuffy nose, constipation, or sexual side effects. If Desyrel side effects are experienced, then you should discontinue use and meet with your doctor again to discuss antidepressant medication alternatives.
