Contraindications

Avoid using Depo-Medrol if any of the following apply:

  • Allergy to Methylprednisolone or any ingredients in the medication
  • History of blood disorder called idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura
  • Conditions that require intrathecal administration
  • Use in premature infants due to the formulation containing benzyl alcohol
  • Systemic fungal infections

Cautions

  • Before using Depo-Medrol, inform your doctor about the following:
    • Any medications you take, especially anticoagulants, diabetic medications, and any medication that interacts with corticosteroids
    • Any medical conditions you have, such as diabetes, liver disease, kidney problems, or heart issues
    • If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as Depo-Medrol may harm your unborn baby
    • If you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, since the drug can pass into breast milk and potentially harm your baby
    • If you have had any recent surgeries or plan to have surgery with general anesthesia
  • Depo-Medrol may cause low potassium levels, which may cause leg cramps, constipation, irregular heartbeats, or muscle weakness.
  • This medication may have a possible impact on growth in children. Inform your doctor if you notice your child isn't growing at a normal rate while using Depo-Medrol.
  • This medication may carry a risk of serious neurological events following epidural administration, such as spinal cord infarction, paraplegia, or stroke.
  • When using multi dose vials, take special care to prevent contamination. A povidone-iodine solution is recommended for cleaning the vial top.
  • This steroid formulation is sensitive to heat. Do not autoclave the vial.
  • Use the lowest possible dose to control your condition. If a reduction in dosage is possible, it should be done gradually.
  • The metabolic clearance of corticosteroids varies with thyroid status. Inform your healthcare provider if you have any thyroid problems.
  • Use with caution if you have gastrointestinal issues like peptic ulcers, diverticulitis, or ulcerative colitis, as corticosteroids may increase the risk of perforation.
  • High doses may cause acute myopathy or psychological changes, ranging from mood swings to severe depression and psychosis.
  • If treatment extends beyond 6 weeks, intraocular pressure should be monitored. Use cautiously if you have ocular herpes simplex.
  • Do not discontinue abruptly or without medical supervision. If you develop a fever or other signs of infection, seek medical advice immediately. Avoid exposure to chickenpox or measles.

Side Effects

Depo-Medrol (Methylprednisolone) may cause side effects. Common side effects can include weight gain, slow wound healing, headache, muscle pain or weakness, thinning skin, and increased sweating. Some people might also experience other effects, such as aggression, agitation, blurred vision, mood changes, and numbness or tingling in the arms or legs.

More serious side effects of Depo-Medrol requiring immediate medical attention include severe heart problems, pancreatitis, esophagitis, seizures, vision problems, and allergic reactions.
