What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Depen is a prescription medication used to treat conditions where toxins have accumulated in the body. Approved indications include:

Do not change your dose without talking to your doctor; take it exactly as directed.

Depen should be taken on an empty stomach one hour before and two hours after meals.

The penicillamine dosage ranges from 250 mg to 4000 mg per day. The dose is divided into one, two, three, or four times per day.


Penicillamine is the active ingredient in Depen.


Drug-drug interactions with Depen include:

  • Digoxin
  • Gold sodium thiomalate
  • Polyvalent cation containing products


Do not miss doses of penicillamine because it can cause severe side effects when the medication is restarted.

Depen has many potential serious side effects and should be used under the close supervision of a physician with experience using the medication.

Approximately one-third of patients experience an allergic reaction when taking this medication.
