What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Demadex (torsemide) is a diuretic (water pill) that is prescribed for the treatment of edema (swelling) related to congestive heart failure (CHF), kidney disease, or liver disease. It is also prescribed for the treatment of high blood pressure.

Demadex medication comes in 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, and 100 mg tablets for oral administration.

Directions

Demadex should be taken as instructed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns regarding the medication may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Your doctor will determine an appropriate dose for you depending on the condition being treated and how well you respond to the medication.

The typical starting dose for patients with CHF is Demadex 10 mg or 20 mg orally one time a day. The doctor may adjust the dose as needed.

The typical starting dose for patients with kidney failure is Demadex 20 mg orally one time a day. The doctor may adjust the dose as needed.

The typical starting dose for patients with liver cirrhosis is Demadex 5 mg or 10 mg orally one time a day. The doctor may adjust the dose as needed.

The typical starting dose for patients with high blood pressure is Demadex 5 mg orally one time a day. The doctor may adjust the dose as needed.

Ingredients

The loop diuretic torsemide is the active ingredient in Demadex. It works ridding your body of excess sodium, chloride, and water via urination. Lactose NF, crospovidone NF, povidone USP, microcrystalline cellulose NF, and magnesium stearate NF are the inactive ingredients included.

Contraindications

Patients with an allergy to any of Demadex’s ingredients or to sulfonylureas are not recommended to take the medication.

Cautions

  • Before you begin taking Demadex, inform your doctor doctor of:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Because sudden changes in fluid and electrolyte status can occur that may result in liver coma, Demadex should be used cautiously in patients with liver cirrhosis and swelling.
  • Demadex may cause ringing in the ears and hearing loss (usually reversible).
  • Dryness of the mouth, thirst, weakness, lethargy, drowsiness, restlessness, muscle pains or cramps, muscular fatigue, low blood pressure, low urine output, rapid heart rate, nausea, and vomiting are symptoms that may occur due to electrolyte imbalance, low volume, and abnormally high levels of waste in the body.
  • Abnormal electrolyte levels in the blood can occur with Demadex use.
  • Elevations in lab values, including blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine, and uric acid, can occur with Demadex use.
  • Decreased blood cell counts can occur with Demadex use.

Side Effects

Demadex side effects include, but are not limited to, headache, excessive urination, and dizziness. Inform your doctor immediately of any side effects that are bothersome or persistent.
