What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Declomycin (Demeclocycline) is an antibiotic from the tetracycline class. It is derived from a strain of Streptomyces aureofaciens. It works by blocking bacterial protein synthesis, thus preventing the growth of bacteria. This medication treats various bacterial infections such as Lyme disease, acne, and bronchitis.

Directions

Demeclocycline is typically administered orally. It is important to follow your doctor or healthcare provider’s instructions. The Declomycin dosage varies based on the type of infection being treated, generally ranging from 150 mg to 300 mg, taken two to four times daily. Avoid lying down immediately after taking it to prevent irritation of the esophagus. It is important to complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms appear to improve. Do not take demeclocycline alongside dairy products or supplements containing iron or calcium, as these can interfere with absorption.

Ingredients

Demeclocycline Hydrochloride is the active ingredient in Declomycin.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if you have an allergy to Demeclocycline or other tetracyclines.

Cautions

  • Before beginning treatment with Declomycin, make sure to disclose the following to your healthcare provider:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A complete list of medications you are currently using
    • Your status regarding pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Do not use Declomycin if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it can harm your unborn baby. Children under 8 years old should not take this medication because it can cause permanent tooth discoloration and affect tooth development.
  • Declomycin may interfere with bone growth in unborn babies and premature infants. If you're pregnant or your child is prescribed this medication, discuss the potential risks with your doctor.
  • This medication can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, leading to severe sunburns even with brief exposure. Protect yourself by wearing sunscreen, covering up, and avoiding prolonged time in the sun while using Declomycin.
  • Long-term use may lead to a condition called diabetes insipidus, causing excessive thirst and frequent urination. If you notice these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.
  • Declomycin can increase pressure in your skull, leading to headaches, blurred vision, or dizziness. If you experience these symptoms, stop taking the medication and seek medical attention.
  • Because of possible dizziness or vision changes, be careful when driving or operating machinery until you know how Declomycin affects you.
  • Using this antibiotic can sometimes lead to new infections from resistant bacteria or fungi. If you develop new symptoms or infections, inform your doctor promptly.
  • In rare cases, Declomycin can cause severe diarrhea due to an overgrowth of certain bacteria in your intestines. If you have persistent or bloody diarrhea, contact your doctor immediately.

Side Effects

Declomycin may cause some common side effects, such as loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. You might also experience headaches, dizziness, and inflammation of the tongue or difficulty swallowing. Skin reactions such as mild rashes and increased sensitivity to sunlight are also frequently reported. These side effects are usually mild and often resolve on their own as your body adjusts to the medication.

While rare, Declomycin may cause serious side effects that require immediate medical attention. These include severe allergic reactions like hives, swelling of the face or throat, and difficulty breathing. Liver problems may present as yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or persistent stomach pain. In addition, severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, characterized by extensive rash, blistering, or peeling skin, can occur. If you experience any serious symptoms, stop taking Declomycin and contact your healthcare provider or go to the nearest emergency room.
