Daypro (Oxaprozin)

Description

Daypro is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) available by prescription to relieve signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA).

Daypro is available in 600 mg oral caplets.

Directions

Daypro should be taken as prescribed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns about the medication may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosing for each patient is individualized and depends on treatment goals; however, the lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest duration.

Recommended dosing for OA: Two 600 mg caplets (1200 mg) by mouth once daily

Recommended dosing for RA: Two 600 mg caplets (1200 mg) by mouth once daily

Recommended dosing for JRA:

• Patients weighing 22-31 kg (48.4-68.2 lbs): One caplet (600 mg) by mouth once daily
• Patients weighing 32-54 kg (70.4-118.8 lbs): 900 mg by mouth once daily
• Patients weighing at least 55 kg (121 lbs): Two caplets (1200 mg) by mouth once daily

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Daypro is oxaprozin.

The inactive ingredients in Daypro include microcrystalline cellulose, hypromellose, methylcellulose, magnesium stearate, polacrilin potassium, starch, polyethylene glycol, and titanium dioxide.

Contraindications

Some patients should avoid taking Daypro, including those who:

• Have an allergy to the medication or any of its ingredients
• Have a history of asthma, hives, or other allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
• Are undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery

Cautions

• Daypro contains the following FDA Boxed Warning:

• The risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events such as potentially fatal heart attack and stroke is increased by NSAID use. The risk may occur early in treatment and may increase the longer a patient is on the medication.

• Patients who are undergoing CABG surgery should not take Daypro.

• The risk of serious and potentially fatal gastrointestinal (GI) adverse events such as bleeding, ulceration, and perforation of the stomach or intestines, is increased by NSAID use. These events can occur at any time during treatment and may not always have warning symptoms. Those at greater risk include older patients and patients who have had peptic ulcer disease and/or GI bleeding.

• Before you start taking Daypro medication, tell your doctor about:
• All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
• Your allergies
• Your current health conditions and past medical history
• Your pregnancy status
• Your breastfeeding status
• Liver damage that leads to warning signs and symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, lethargy, diarrhea, itching, right upper quadrant tenderness, flu-like symptoms, and yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes can occur with Daypro use. If you experience any of these signs and symptoms, seek medical care right away.
• Blood pressure should be monitored while on Daypro, as the medication can cause high blood pressure, worsen pre-existing high blood pressure, or affect the way some blood pressure medications work.
• Patients who have severe heart failure or advanced kidney disease should avoid taking Daypro unless the benefits outweigh the risks.
• Daypro can cause anaphylactic reactions in some people. Immediately seek emergency care if you have difficulty breathing; swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat; a rash; or other symptoms of a severe allergic reaction.
• Patients who have aspirin-sensitive asthma should avoid taking Daypro. Monitoring should, however, still take place in patients with asthma that is not aspirin-sensitive.
• Daypro can cause serious skin reactions. Quit Daypro use and contact your doctor as soon as you notice a rash or other signs of a reaction.
• Daypro can cause life-threatening and potentially fatal Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS), which can cause a fever, rash, swollen lymph nodes, and/or facial swelling, liver or kidney inflammation, bleeding issues, heart muscle inflammation, or muscle inflammation. Quit Daypro use and seek emergency care immediately if you develop any of these effects.
• Women who are about 30 weeks pregnant or later should avoid taking NSAIDs including Daypro because they can injure an unborn fetus.
• Anemia and an increased risk of bleeding can be caused by NSAIDs including Daypro. Seek medical care immediately if you have symptoms of anemia or bleeding.

Side Effects

Constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, nausea, and rash are common Daypro side effects. These are not all the side effects that can occur, so call your doctor if you develop bothersome or persistent side effects.
