What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Contour Next is a type of blood glucose monitoring system. The device is used to test blood sugar in people with diabetes mellitus. It is commonly used for type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

Testing blood sugar is a quick and effective way to measure how well the drugs that treat diabetes are working. It can also be used to measure overall blood sugar control.

Directions

Prepare a clean space with enough room for all of your testing supplies.

  1. Choose a finger to test, and wipe the tip with an alcohol prep pad. Do not use your thumb.
  2. Wait for the alcohol to dry.
  3. After the alcohol has dried, use a lancet to poke a small hole in the side of the finger just below the tip, but not on the fingertip.
  4. Gently squeeze the finger around the testing site until a small bead of blood forms.
  5. Insert a test strip into the glucometer.
  6. Once the glucometer is ready, touch the tip of the test strip to the blood.
  7. Hold the meter until a result appears.

Ingredients

You will need the following supplies to test your blood sugar:

  1. Contour Next blood sugar monitoring device
  2. Contour Next test strips
  3. Lancet or lancing device
  4. Alcohol prep pads 70%

Cautions

Replace your glucometer at least every three years.

Check the expiration date on your test strips each time you open a new box and do not use expired test strips.

Ensure you enter the correct code from the test strips into the glucometer before each test.

Never use a lancet more than once or share them with other people.

Do not adjust your medications without speaking with your healthcare provider first.
