What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Cleocin (clindamycin) is an antibacterial medication used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, skin, blood, intra-abdominal, pelvis, and genital tract. 

Cleocin comes in oral capsules of 75 mg, 150 mg, and 300 mg.

Directions

Take Cleocin as prescribed by your doctor. It's recommended that you finish your course of antibiotics, even if you're feeling better. Refer any questions or concerns you may have to your doctor or pharmacist.

Dosing:

Serious infections in adults: 150 mg to 300 mg by mouth every 6 hours. For more severe infections, the dose may be 300 mg to 450 mg by mouth every 6 hours.

Serious infections in pediatric patients: 8 mg-16 mg/kg/day divided into three or four equal doses. For more severe infections, the dose may be 16 mg-20 mg/kg/day divided into three or four equal doses.

Swallow Cleocin capsules whole. Take the medication with a full glass of water.

Treatment may last up to 10 days depending on the type of infection being treated.

Ingredients

Clindamycin is the active ingredient in Cleocin capsules. 

The inactive ingredients contained in the 75 mg and 150 mg capsules include corn starch, FD and C blue no. 1, FD and C yellow no.5, gelatin, lactose, magnesium stearate, and talc. The 150 mg capsules also contain titanium dioxide. Corn starch, FD and C blue no. 1, gelatin, lactose, magnesium stearate, talc, and titanium dioxide are inactive ingredients in the 300 mg capsules.

Contraindications

Cleocin should be avoided in patients who have an allergy to it or lincomycin.

Cautions

Cleocin has FDA Boxed Warnings regarding the risk of mild diarrhea to fatal colitis and overgrowth of Clostridium difficile (C. diff).

  • Before you begin treatment with Cleocin, tell your doctor:
    • About any medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your medical history and health problems
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Do not use Cleocin to treat meningitis.
  • Kidney damage can occur with the use of Cleocin.
  • Serious allergic reactions can occur with the use of Cleocin. Seek emergency care right away if you have trouble breathing; swelling of your face, lips, or tongue; or skin reactions.

Side Effects

Cleocin side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serious side effects like C. diff, skin rashes, kidney damage, and lab abnormalities can also occur. 

Call your doctor right away if you have side effects that become bothersome or won't go away.
