A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Tolnaftate is an antifungal medication that fights infections caused by fungus. Clarus Antifungal (for the skin) is used to treat infections such as athlete's foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and ringworm (tinea corporis). Tolnaftate is also used with other antifungals to treat infections of the nails, scalp, palms, and soles of the feet. Clarus Antifungal may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Use exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Do not take by mouth. Clarus Antifungal is for use only on the skin. Do not use this medicine on open wounds or on sunburned, windburned, dry, chapped, or irritated skin. If this medicine gets in your eyes, nose, mouth, rectum, or vagina, rinse with water. Do not cover the treated skin area with a bandage that does not allow air circulation. You may use a light cotton-gauze dressing to protect your clothing over treated skin areas. Wash your hands before and after applying this medicine, unless you are using it to treat a skin condition on your hands. Clean and dry the skin before you apply tolnafate topical. Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use.
