Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Clarinex, known by its generic name Desloratadine, is an antihistamine that tackles symptoms of allergies. It works by blocking a chemical in the body called histamine, which is released during allergic reactions. As a result, it helps reduce symptoms like sneezing, a runny nose, and itchy or watery eyes. Clarinex is considered a long-lasting antihistamine, and doctors often recommend it for people living with hay fever and skin rashes called hives.

Clarinex should be taken by mouth. Adults and children 12 years and older commonly take 5 mg once daily. For younger individuals aged 6 to 11, the usual dosage is 2.5 mg once a day. The medication should be taken exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider. If you have kidney or liver impairment, it may be necessary to adjust the dose; typically, people with kidney or liver problems start with 5 mg every other day.
The active ingredient in Clarinex is Desloratadine.
Avoid taking or using this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity or allergy to Desloratadine or any of the ingredients in the medication.
In clinical trials, Clarinex was generally well tolerated, with side effects similar to placebo. The most common side effects in adults and adolescents included sore throat, dry mouth, fatigue, muscle pain, and menstrual cramps. In patients with chronic hives, some also experienced nausea, dizziness, indigestion, and headache. In children, common side effects included fever, diarrhea, coughing, and upper respiratory tract infections, depending on age group.
Post-marketing reports have identified rare but serious side effects including seizures, movement disorders, and allergic reactions like rash, hives, and anaphylaxis. Some patients also reported heart palpitations, shortness of breath, or elevated liver enzymes. Though uncommon, hepatitis and increased appetite were also noted. If you experience symptoms such as severe rash, trouble breathing, or unusual muscle movements, seek immediate medical attention.
