What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Celluvisc is a lubricating eye drop that provides temporary relief from dryness, burning, or irritation in the eyes. The drops form a thick, moisture-holding layer on the eye that is similar to natural tears. As a result, it may keep the eyes comfortable longer, especially in windy, sunny, or dry conditions. Each dose comes in a small single-use vial and is preservative-free, which can make it a useful choice for people with sensitive eyes or anyone who needs drops often.

Directions

Twist and pull the tab to open a vial. Put 1 to 2 drops into the affected eye or eyes as needed, then throw the vial away after one use. Each vial is meant for a single use only, even if some solution is left inside.

Use only a vial that is fully sealed and intact. Do not let the tip touch your eye, fingers, or any other surface. The drops may blur your vision for a short time, so wait until your vision clears before driving. Store the vials at 15°C to 25°C ( 59 ° F to 77 ° F ) and use them before the expiration date on the package.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Celluvisc is carboxymethylcellulose sodium. Inactive ingredients may include calcium chloride dihydrate, potassium chloride, purified water, sodium chloride, and sodium lactate.

Cautions

  • Before using this medication, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications currently being taken
  • Celluvisc is for use in the eye only and should not be swallowed.
  • To avoid contamination, do not let the tip of the vial touch the eye, the fingers, or any other surface.
  • Each vial is for one use only and should be discarded after opening, even if some solution remains.
  • Do not use the drops if the solution changes color or becomes cloudy, or if the single-use vial is damaged.
  • Temporary blurred vision is common right after the drops go in, so wait until vision clears before driving or using machinery.
  • Stop using Celluvisc and speak with a healthcare provider if you have eye pain, changes in vision, continued redness or irritation, or if the condition gets worse or lasts more than 72 hours.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Celluvisc include:

  • Temporary blurred vision
  • Mild stinging or burning when the drops go in
  • A sticky or filmy feeling on the eyelids and lashes
  • Eye redness
  • Watery eyes

Serious reactions to Celluvisc are uncommon. Stop using it and get medical help if you develop eye pain, changes in vision, or redness and irritation that continues or gets worse. Consult a healthcare provider if the dryness lasts longer than 72 hours, since these can point to an eye problem that needs treatment. Signs of an allergic reaction, such as a rash, itching, or swelling of the face, eyelids, or throat, require immediate medical attention.
