What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Catapres is a prescription medication that is taken to treat high blood pressure. The Catapres generic is clonidine hydrochloride.

Catapres is available in 0.1 mg, 0.2 mg, and 0.3 mg oral tablets.

Directions

You should take Catapres medication as advised by your doctor. If you have any questions or concerns, speak with your doctor or pharmacist.

Depending upon your blood pressure and response to the medication, your dose may be adjusted.

Catapres is usually started at 0.1 mg taken by mouth twice daily. Your doctor may increase your dose until desired blood pressure is reached.

Elderly patients or patients who have kidney problems may need a lower dose.

Ingredients

The active ingredient contained in Catapres is clonidine hydrochloride. Inactive ingredients include the following: colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, dibasic calcium phosphate, FD and C Yellow No. 6, gelatin, glycerin, lactose, and magnesium stearate. FD and C Blue No.1 and FD and Red No.3. are also contained in the Catapres 0.1 mg tablet.

Contraindications

You should avoid taking Catapres if you have an allergy to clonidine or to any of the medication’s other ingredients.

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Catapres, tell your doctor:
    • About any prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • If you have any allergies
    • About any health conditions you may have
    • About your past medical history
    • If you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Treatment with Catapres should not be stopped unless directed by your doctor. Stopping treatment abruptly can cause symptoms such as nervousness, agitation, headache, tremor, and increased blood pressure.
  • If you have a sensitivity or allergy to Catapres patches, an allergic reaction may occur with Catapres tablets.
  • If you are going to have surgery, tell your doctor.
  • Until you know how the medication affects you, avoid driving or other hazardous activities.
  • The sedative effects of Catapres may increase if taken with alcohol or other sedating medications.
  • Dry eyes may occur while taking Catapres.
  • Use Catapres with caution if you have severe coronary insufficiency, conduction problems, cerebrovascular disease, chronic kidney failure, or if you had a heart attack recently.

Side Effects

Some, but not all, side effects associated with Catapres include the following: dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, and sedation. If you develop persistent or concerning side effects, immediately talk to your doctor.
