Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Catapres-TTS is a medication that manages hypertension, or high blood pressure. It works by reducing specific chemicals in the blood to decrease heart rate and relax the blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Clonidine belongs to a class of drugs known as centrally acting alpha-agonist hypotensive agents. The medication comes in a patch form, delivering a consistent amount of clonidine through the skin over a period which typically ranges from one to seven days, depending on the patch size.

It’s important to put the patch on the skin the right way to get the best results. Usually, you apply the patch once every 7 days on a hairless, clean, and dry spot, like the upper outer arm or chest. Make sure the skin is not broken or irritated before putting on the patch. Each time you use a new patch, choose a different spot on your skin to avoid irritation. Follow any other instructions from your doctor and watch for side effects like skin redness or feeling sleepy. If you have any questions or problems while using the patch, talk to your doctor.
Clonidine is the active ingredient in Catapres-TTS.
Avoid using this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity to clonidine or any part of the transdermal system.
The most common side effects of Catapres-TTS are dry mouth, drowsiness, fatigue, headache, and dizziness. Some people may also experience constipation, nausea, sleep disturbances, or changes in sexual function. Local skin reactions are common, with over half of patients reporting redness, itching, or irritation at the patch site. In some cases, these reactions may lead to discontinuation of treatment, especially during the first few months.
Less common but serious side effects may include slow heart rate, low blood pressure, fainting, or signs of heart rhythm abnormalities. Rarely, patients may experience depression, hallucinations, vivid dreams, or behavioral changes. Allergic reactions like rash, angioedema, or hives have also been reported. Post-marketing reports have included visual disturbances, urinary problems, weight gain, muscle cramps, and withdrawal symptoms if the medication is stopped abruptly.
