What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Cardura (Doxazosin) is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men. It works by relaxing the blood vessels so blood can flow more easily and relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder, which can help men urinate more easily. Cardura may be used alone or with other medications to help manage these conditions.

Directions

Cardura is typically taken by mouth once at the same time each day. You can take it with or without food. Most people start with a low dose, usually 1 mg per day. Your healthcare provider may slowly increase the dose to 2 mg, 4 mg, or up to 8 mg, depending on how you respond and if you have any side effects. Swallow the tablets whole—do not crush, chew, or break them. Always follow a healthcare provider’s instructions and do not stop taking Cardura suddenly.

Ingredients

Cardura contains the active ingredient Doxazosin.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Allergy to any ingredient in the drug formulation
  • Allergy to other quinazolines

Cautions

  • Before taking Cardura you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Cardura can sometimes cause a quick drop in blood pressure, especially when you stand up too fast. This is called postural hypotension and may cause dizziness, lightheadedness, or even fainting—especially after the first dose or if your dose increases.
  • Some people who take or have taken Cardura have experienced a condition during cataract surgery called Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome (IFIS). This can make the surgery more complicated. Be sure to tell your eye surgeon ahead of time if you take or have taken Cardura.
  • Cardura is often used to treat symptoms of BPH, but these symptoms can also be caused by prostate cancer. Your doctor should check to rule out cancer before starting treatment.
  • Although rare, Cardura has been linked to priapism, a painful erection that lasts several hours and doesn't go away. This is a medical emergency. If it happens, seek help right away to avoid long-term damage.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Cardura are dizziness and feeling weak or tired. These may occur more often when starting treatment or after a dose increase. Some people may feel lightheaded when standing up quickly. Let your healthcare provider know if these symptoms become bothersome.

Cardura can sometimes cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, which may lead to fainting. Rare but serious side effects include priapism and complications during cataract surgery. Be sure to tell your surgeon if you’ve ever taken Cardura before any eye procedure. If you experience any unusual symptoms, seek medical attention promptly.
