What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Cardizem CD contains a calcium channel blocker used to manage high blood pressure and chronic chest pain (angina). It works by relaxing the muscles of the heart and blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow and lowering blood pressure. It’s often prescribed to help prevent certain heart rhythm problems and reduce the risk of heart-related complications in adults.

Directions

This medication is taken by mouth, usually once a day at the same time each day. Swallow the capsule whole—do not chew, break, or crush it. Healthcare providers often prescribe a daily dose of 180 to 240 milligrams, but they might adjust the dosage every 1 to 2 weeks if needed. The dosage can vary depending on the condition being treated. The maximum dosage is 480 mg once daily. It’s important to follow your healthcare provider’s instructions while taking this drug.

Ingredients

Cardizem CD contains the active ingredient Diltiazem.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Sick sinus syndrome (unless a working ventricular pacemaker is present)
  • Second- or third-degree AV block (unless a pacemaker is present)
  • Low blood pressure (severe hypotension)
  • Acute myocardial infarction with left ventricular failure
  • Known allergy or hypersensitivity to any ingredients in the medication

Cautions

  • Before taking Cardizem CD you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Cardizem CD may slow down how electrical signals move through the heart. In rare cases, this can lead to very slow heart rates or heart block—especially if you already have a condition like sick sinus syndrome or are taking other heart medications like beta-blockers or digoxin.
  • If you already have a weak heart or heart failure, Cardizem CD could make symptoms worse. Your doctor may monitor your heart closely or adjust other medications if you’re being treated for both conditions.
  • Some people may feel faint or dizzy if their blood pressure drops while taking Cardizem CD. Let your doctor know if you feel lightheaded, especially after starting the medication or changing your dose.
  • Cardizem CD can occasionally affect the liver. Most changes are mild and go away on their own, but your doctor may want to monitor your liver function through blood tests, especially during the first weeks of treatment.
  • Some people may get skin rashes that go away even if they keep taking the medicine. But in rare cases, more serious skin conditions like peeling or redness can occur.
  • Cardizem CD interacts with many medications, including some for cholesterol (like simvastatin), anxiety (like buspirone), seizures (like carbamazepine), and heart rhythm problems. It can also affect drugs like digoxin, cyclosporine, and certain antibiotics. Always let your doctor or pharmacist know everything you’re taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
  • Alcohol can increase how quickly the medication enters your system, which may raise the risk of side effects. It’s best to avoid drinking alcohol while on this medication.
  • This medication should only be used during pregnancy if clearly needed, as it may carry risks to the baby. It also passes into breast milk, so your doctor may suggest other feeding options if you need to take this drug while nursing.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Cardizem CD include headache, dizziness, slow heart rate (bradycardia), and swelling in the ankles or feet. Some people may also experience fatigue or weakness. These side effects are generally mild, but should still be reported to a healthcare provider if they become bothersome or persistent. Heart rhythm changes like first-degree AV block have also been observed in a small number of patients.

Less common side effects may involve the stomach, skin, or nervous system. These include constipation, dry mouth, rash, abnormal dreams, and difficulty sleeping. Rare but serious reactions such as liver enzyme changes, allergic reactions, or Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been reported. Contact a healthcare provider right away if you experience unusual skin reactions, signs of liver trouble, or symptoms like chest pain or fainting.
