What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

CAFERGOT medicine is a combination product that contains both ergotamine and caffeine and is used to treat vascular headaches. Examples of vascular headaches include cluster headaches, migraine headaches, and toxic headaches.

Vascular headaches are caused by the dilation intracranial blood vessels, with swelling that produces the sensation of throbbing, pulsatile pain. During vascular headaches, the veins are swollen and inflamed, pushing into the surrounding intracranial tissue.

CAFERGOT medicine vasoconstricts the intracranial blood vessels, providing quick relief for vascular headaches.

Directions

Take 2 tablets of CAFERGOT medicine upon the first symptom of a vascular headache. Do not take more than 6 tablets for a single headache or use more than 10 tablets in a 7-day period. CAFERGOT is not effective for non-vascular headaches and is not an analgesic.

Ingredients

Ergotamine Tartrate 1 mg per tablet

Ergotamine tartrate blocks alpha-adrenergic receptors in the vascular tissue. Alpha blockage leads to the stimulation and constriction of smooth muscle cells of the vasculature.

Caffeine 100 mg per tablet

Caffeine also causes vasoconstriction by mechanisms other than alpha-antagonism. The addition of caffeine to CAFERGOT medicine increases the potency without increasing the dosage of ergotamine tartrate, sparing further ischemic side effects.

Cautions

CAFERGOT medicine should not be used by pregnant women. If you become pregnant while taking this medication, stop taking it and alert your physician. It may cause harm to the developing fetus.

You can develop a psychological dependence on CAFERGOT medicine if taken more often than prescribed. Patients who use CAFERGOT more than prescribed or for long periods are at a higher risk of developing dependence.

Prolonged used of CAFERGOT medicine can result in ergotism, a condition characterized by decreased blood flow to peripheral tissue. Symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, coldness in the hands and feet, and numbness. Overdosing on ergotamine derivatives can also cause ergotism.

CAFERGOT medicine has many potential drug interactions with CYP3A4 inhibitors. Ask your doctor or pharmacist before starting any new medications that may interact. Avoid other alpha-blocking agents while taking this medication like over-the-counter products that contain pseudoephedrine or ephedrine.

Side Effects

The following side effects have been noted in the CAFERGOT medicine package insert:

  • Edema
  • Hypertension
  • Increased heart rate
  • Ischemic symptoms, ergotism (cyanosis, cold extremities, muscle pains, and others)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Numbness
  • Paresthesias
  • Pruritis
  • Tachycardia or bradycardia
  • Vertigo
  • Weakness

A prescription is required to buy CAFERGOT medicine. Canada Drug Direct has ergotamine tartrate for sale in combination with caffeine, and they are available after consultation and prescription from a physician.
