Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
BUCCASTEM (prochlorperazine) is a medication prescribed to treat nausea and vomiting. It is a buccal tablet, which means it's placed between the gums and the lips, where it slowly releases medication over one to two hours.
Prochlorperazine is available in the United States, but this particular buccal formulation is not.
BUCCASTEM works by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain. Dopamine is responsible for several functions of the body, including temperature regulation, muscle tone, and vomiting. By blocking these receptors, BUCCASTEM helps to treat nausea and vomiting.
Take BUCCASTEM exactly as directed by your doctor.
The normal dose is 3-6 mg by mouth between the lips and gums twice daily. Leave BUCCASTEM in place for one to two hours while it slowly dissolves. Do not move BUCCASTEM around, as this may cause it to dissolve too quickly and increase certain side effects.
Do not take BUCCASTEM longer than two days unless directed by your doctor.
The active ingredient in BUCCASTEM is prochlorperazine. It comes as BUCCASTEM 3 mg tablets.
BUCCASTEM has drug interactions with the following types of medications:
Tell your doctor if you use any medications in these classes before you start using BUCCASTEM.
Tell your doctor if you have a history of low blood pressure or heart problems.
BUCCASTEM may increase the risk of falls, especially in older adults and those with low blood pressure.
Tell your doctor if you experience any visual problems while taking BUCCASTEM.
Common BUCCASTEM side effects include:
