What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Bevespi Aerosphere Inhalation Aerosol is a combination medication used to treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). Bevespi Aerosphere contains glycopyrrolate, an anticholinergic, and formoterol fumarate, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (LABA).

Directions

Bevespi Aerosphere is indicated for inhalation by mouth. The dose for maintenance treatment of COPD is to inhale 2 puffs twice daily.

9 mcg glycopyrrolate and 4.8 mcg of formoterol fumarate are delivered with each inhalation.

Ingredients

Micronized glycopyrrolate and micronized formoterol fumarate are the active ingredients in Bevespi Aerosphere.

Contraindications

A LABA should not be used without an inhaled corticosteroid if you have asthma.

Tell your doctor about any allergies you have. Bevespi Aerosphere should not be used if you are allergic to glycopyrrolate, formoterol fumarate, or any of its other ingredients.

Cautions

  • Discuss all your prescription and over-the-counter medications you take, including vitamins and herbal supplements, with your doctor.
  • Do not use Bevespi Aerosphere to relieve sudden symptoms of COPD.
  • Do not use Bevespi Aerosphere with other medications that contain a LABA due to the risk of overdose.
  • Seek emergency care immediately if you develop breathing problems, need to use your rescue inhaler more frequently, or your rescue inhaler doesn't work to fully relieve your symptoms.
  • Stop taking Bevespi Aerosphere and seek alternative treatment if you experience trouble breathing after using Bevespi Aerosphere.
  • Let your doctor know if you have heart problems or high blood pressure. Seek emergency care immediately if you experience chest pain, high blood pressure, rapid or irregular heartbeat.
  • Let your doctor know if you have eye problems. Tell your doctor right away if you develop eye pain, vision problems, nausea, vomiting, or eye redness while being treated with Bevespi Aerosphere.
  • Let your doctor know if you have prostatic hyperplasia or bladder-neck obstruction. Tell your doctor right away if you have trouble urinating, pain when urinating, frequent urination, or urinating in weak streams or drips while being treated with Bevespi Aerosphere.
  • Bevespi Aerosphere can affect your potassium levels and blood sugar levels. 
    • Tell your doctor right away if you develop signs of hypokalemia (low blood potassium levels): muscle cramps, muscle twitches, irregular heartbeats.
    • Tell your doctor right away if you experience high blood sugar levels.
  • Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan to get pregnant.
  • Let your doctor know if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed.

Side Effects

Bevespi Aerosphere commonly causes a cough and a urinary tract infection. Tell your doctor right away if you experience any other side effects.
