What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

BenzaClin is a gel used to treat acne. It contains two main ingredients: Clindamycin, which is an antibiotic that helps fight bacteria, and Benzoyl Peroxide, which helps prevent the bacteria from becoming resistant to treatment. This combination works by reducing inflammation and targeting the bacteria that cause acne.

Directions

The BenzaClin dosage involves applying the medicine to the affected areas of your skin once a day after you wash your face and gently dry it. Take a small amount, about the size of a pea, and spread a thin layer over your entire face. Be careful to keep it away from your eyes, mouth, and any cuts or scrapes. If you accidentally get some in your eyes, nose, or mouth, rinse them thoroughly with water.

After using BenzaClin, wash your hands to remove any leftover medication. It's important not to put other skin products like makeup, sunscreen, or lip balm on the treated area unless you check with your doctor first. Also, keep in mind that BenzaClin can bleach hair or colored fabrics, so try to avoid contact with these.

Ingredients

The active ingredients in Benzaclin are Clindamycin and Benzoyl Peroxide.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Allergy to Clindamycin or Lincomycin
  • Allergy to Benzoyl Peroxide
  • History of ulcerative colitis or other inflammatory bowel diseases

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with BenzaClin, make sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • BenzaClin contains Clindamycin, which can lead to severe diarrhea, including bloody diarrhea or colitis caused by Clostridium difficile. If you experience persistent or severe diarrhea with abdominal cramps, stop using the medication and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Use BenzaClin Topical Gel on the skin only. Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, nose, and mucous membranes, as it may cause irritation.
  • BenzaClin can cause redness, peeling, or irritation. Minimize exposure to sunlight or tanning beds, and use sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) or protective clothing when outdoors.
  • Avoid using other topical acne products unless directed by your doctor, as they may increase skin irritation.
  • If you experience swelling, severe redness, or difficulty breathing, stop using BenzaClin and seek medical help immediately.
  • Using antibiotics like BenzaClin may lead to the overgrowth of fungi or other nonsusceptible organisms. Notify your doctor if new symptoms appear or existing symptoms worsen.
  • BenzaClin is categorized as Pregnancy Category C. There isn’t enough data to determine if it’s safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Discuss with your doctor before use if you are pregnant or nursing.
  • The safety and effectiveness of BenzaClin have not been established for children under 12 years old.
  • BenzaClin may bleach hair or colored fabrics. Be cautious when applying the medication.
  • Store at room temperature (up to 25°C/77°F) and discard unused product after three months. Do not freeze.
  • Cleanse the affected area gently with warm water and pat dry before applying a thin layer of BenzaClin Topical Gel as directed by your doctor.
  • Do not use BenzaClin with products containing Erythromycin, as these antibiotics may counteract each other.
  • Animal studies suggest that benzoyl peroxide, a component of BenzaClin, may act as a tumor promoter under specific conditions. The clinical relevance of this finding in humans is unknown.

Side Effects

The most common side effect reported during clinical trials was dry skin, occurring in 12% of patients, often managed with a moisturizer. Other commonly observed local reactions included application site irritation, peeling, itching, and redness. Sunburn was also noted in a small number of patients. These effects were generally mild and did not require discontinuation of treatment.

Rare but serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported post-marketing. These reactions may require immediate medical attention and have occasionally led to hospitalization. If you experience symptoms such as severe swelling, difficulty breathing, or intense rash, stop using BenzaClin and seek medical care.
