What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Benazepril is a veterinary prescription medication that belongs to the class of ACE inhibitors. It’s used in dogs to manage congestive heart failure and in cats to reduce protein loss in the urine caused by chronic kidney disease. Once given, benazepril is converted in the body to its active form, benazeprilat, which helps relax blood vessels, lower blood pressure, and reduce strain on the heart and kidneys.

Directions

Benazepril is an oral medication given once daily to dogs and cats, either with or without food. To keep steady levels in the body, it should be given at the same time each day. For dogs, the starting dose is at least 0.25 mg per kilogram of body weight, with a range of 0.25–0.5 mg/kg once daily. Cats may require a higher dose range of 0.5–1.0 mg/kg once daily.

Treatment is usually long-term and should continue as long as your veterinarian recommends. Always follow dosing instructions closely and do not change the amount without veterinary approval.

Ingredients

Benazepril is the active ingredient in this drug.

Contraindications

Avoid giving this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Allergy to the active substance or any excipients
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Hypovolaemia (low blood volume/dehydration)
  • Hyponatraemia (low blood sodium)
  • Acute renal failure
  • Cardiac output failure due to aortic or pulmonary valve stenosis
  • Pregnancy or lactation

Cautions

  • Before giving this medication, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications currently being taken
  • Benazepril is generally safe for dogs and cats with kidney disease, but your veterinarian may recommend regular blood tests to check kidney function and blood cell counts during treatment.
  • The safety of this medication has not been studied in very small pets under 2.5 kg (about 5.5 lbs).
  • Pregnant women should avoid handling this drug, since ACE inhibitors can affect unborn babies. If swallowed accidentally, seek medical help right away and bring the package with you. Always wash your hands after giving the medication.

Side Effects

Most dogs handle benazepril well, and studies show side effects are even less common than in dogs given a placebo. Some dogs may have mild problems like vomiting, tiredness, or unsteadiness, but these usually don’t last long. In cats, the medicine can sometimes boost appetite, which may lead to weight gain.

More serious side effects are rare. Dogs or cats with kidney disease may have higher creatinine levels when starting treatment, but this is often expected with ACE inhibitors and doesn’t always mean the medication needs to be stopped. In uncommon cases, cats have had side effects like vomiting, loss of appetite, dehydration, low energy, or diarrhea.
