What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Baraclude is an antiviral medication that is prescribed to treat different types of infections. It can be used for the treatment of hepatitis B infection. Baraclude may be prescribed along with other medications to manage hepatitis B infection.

Baraclude works by preventing hepatitis B viruses from replicating. It incorporates proteins that help copy their DNA and shut down the replication process.

The dosage of Baraclude depends on whether the hepatitis B infection is acute or chronic and what other medications you have used for treatment. Take it exactly as prescribed by the doctor.

The standard dosage is Baraclude 0.5-1 mg by mouth once daily.

Take on an empty stomach 2 hours before or after a meal.


The active ingredient in Baraclude generic is entecavir.


Interactions with other medications are rare but may include:

  • Cladribine
  • Orlistat

Use caution if you are taking one of these medications when starting Baraclude.


Baraclude can cause lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly with steatosis, both serious side effects. Tell your doctor if you have a history of fatty liver disease. 

Do not stop Baraclude without talking to your doctor because it can worsen chronic hepatitis B infection.

It is recommended to test for HIV before starting Baraclude. If HIV goes unrecognized, then Caraclude can cause the infection to become resistant to certain treatment medications.

Use with caution if you have a history of kidney problems.
