What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Axid is a prescription medication that your doctor may prescribe to treat various conditions that affect the stomach. It treats gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, and H.pylori infections.

Axid works by reducing the amount of acid produced by the stomach. Reducing acid secretion helps relieve symptoms like stomach pain, belching, sour taste in the mouth, nausea, and bloating.

Axid may be prescribed once or twice per day, depending on what is being treated. Take Axid medication exactly as directed by your doctor.

The normal dosage is 150-300 mg by mouth once or twice daily. It should be taken for 8-12 weeks, depending on what condition is being treated. Some people may need long-term treatment with Axid 150 mg once daily.

Axid should be taken with or without food at the same time each day.


The active ingredient in Axid is nizatidine, which is the name for Axid generic.


Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all medications you are taking before starting Axid, especially:

  • Atazanavir
  • Cefpodoxime
  • Cefuroxime
  • Dasatinib
  • Erlotinib
  • Fosamprenavir
  • Gefitinib
  • Indinavir
  • Ketoconazole 
  • Multivitamins/Minerals
  • Nilotinib
  • Octreotide
  • Posaconazole
  • Rilpivirine
  • Risedronate
  • Saquinavir
  • Varenicline
  • Velpatasvir

The above medications may cause moderate to severe drug-drug interactions with Axid.


If you use Axid long term, you are at a greater risk of Vitamin B12 deficiency. Symptoms may include pale skin, weakness, shortness of breath, numbness/tingling of the nerves.

Tell your doctor if you have a history of kidney dysfunction. If so, you may need to take a lower dosage of Axid.
