What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Avian Insect Liquidator is a water-based insecticide for pet birds and the places where they live. It is used to control lice and mites on ornamental caged birds, including parrots, finches, and canaries. It can also be applied to birds and to cages, aviaries, perches, nest boxes, flights, and floors. The product combines three active ingredients: permethrin kills lice and mites, piperonyl butoxide helps permethrin work better, and methoprene prevents young insects from growing into adults. It can help provide quick control and up to six weeks of protection.

Directions

First, check the label to see which Vetafarm product you have: Concentrate or Ready To Use. Both may come in 500 mL bottles, but they are used differently. Dilute the Concentrate before using it by mixing 1 part product with 19 parts water. Never apply it undiluted.

Ready-To-Use bottles need no mixing and can be sprayed directly from the trigger bottle. Hold the sprayer 30 to 40 cm from the bird and spray its body, avoiding the face and eyes. For diluted Concentrate, use 4 to 5 pumps per bird, then thoroughly spray the cage or aviary, including perches and nest boxes.

Remove food and water dishes before spraying and return them only after surfaces are dry. Treatment can protect for up to six weeks. Treatment can be repeated after six weeks or earlier if pests return. Store the closed bottle below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from light.

Ingredients

Avian Insect Liquidator contains permethrin, piperonyl butoxide, and methoprene in a water-based carrier.

Cautions

  • Before using this product, you may want to consult a veterinarian about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications and treatments currently being given
  • Keep this product away from cats entirely. Permethrin is highly toxic to cats as a class effect, causing tremors and seizures that can prove fatal, so do not spray where a cat has access and do not let a cat near treated birds or surfaces until everything is dry.
  • Check the bottle to confirm whether you are holding the Concentrate or the Ready-To-Use bottle, because both are sold in the same 500 mL size and only one of them needs diluting.
  • Keep it away from fish tanks, ponds, and reptile enclosures, and cover any aquarium before you spray nearby.
  • Take food and water containers out before spraying, and wash them if any spray lands on them.
  • Aim for the body and under the wings, and avoid spraying into a bird’s eyes, nostrils, or beak.
  • Open a window during and after treatment, and move any bird with a breathing problem out of the area first.
  • Wear gloves, wash your hands when you finish, and keep the spray off your skin and out of your own eyes.
  • Ask an avian veterinarian before treating chicks, birds in molt, or breeding birds sitting on eggs.
  • Store the bottle out of reach of children.
  • Get a veterinarian to confirm the diagnosis if feather loss or skin irritation persists, since mites and lice are only two of the possible causes.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this product if any of the following apply:

  • The animal is a reptile or a fish
  • The bird is sick, injured, or heavily stressed, unless recommended by a veterinarian

Side Effects

The manufacturer does not publish a list of expected side effects for Avian Insect Liquidator. Potential side effects may include:

  • Brief agitation or flapping during spraying
  • Damp or matted feathers until the spray dries
  • Mild skin irritation where the spray landed
  • Preening more than usual straight after treatment

Move the bird into fresh air and call an avian veterinarian immediately if you notice any wobbling, unresponsiveness, trouble with breathing, or persistent drooling. Contact a veterinarian if skin irritation worsens or spreads rather than improves. If a person swallows the product or gets it in their eyes, rinse thoroughly and call a poison center. Treat any exposure in a cat as an emergency and seek veterinary help.
