What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Aventyl is a medication that is used to treat depression.

Nortriptyline is the generic name for Aventyl.

Aventyl (nortriptyline) 10 mg and 25 mg oral capsules are available by prescription only.

Directions

Follow your doctor’s instructions on how to take Aventyl. Discuss any concerns or questions with your doctor or pharmacist.

Adults are recommended to take 25 mg by mouth three to four times a day. No more than 100 mg per day should be taken.

A lower dose may be needed in older patients and adolescents.

Ingredients

The active ingredient contained in Aventyl is nortriptyline hydrochloride, a tricyclic antidepressant. Inactive ingredients include corn starch, gelatin, lactose, silicon dioxide, sodium lauryl sulphate, stearic acid, talc, titanium dioxide, D and C yellow #10, and FD and C yellow #6.

Contraindications

Patients who are taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) or have taken an MAOI within the past 14 days should not take Aventyl.

Patients who are allergic to nortriptyline should not take Aventyl.

Patients who are recovering from a heart attack should not take Aventyl.

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Aventyl, tell your doctor about:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your medical problems and health history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Aventyl should be used with caution in patients who have:
    • Cardiovascular disease
    • Glaucoma
    • Urinary retention
    • Seizures
    • Hyperthyroidism or taking thyroid medication
    • Schizophrenia
  • Driving and operating machinery should be avoided until you know how you are affected by Aventyl.
  • Because the risk of suicidal ideations and behaviors are increased after initiating Aventyl, patients should be monitored for these effects.
  • Taking Aventyl with alcohol can increase response to the medication and increase the risk of suicidal ideations or behaviors or overdosage.
  • Aventyl can affect blood sugar levels.
  • Stopping Aventyl abruptly can cause nausea, headache, and general discomfort.

Side Effects

Blood pressure changes, heart arrhythmias, heart attack, stroke, mental status changes, numbness, tingling, dry mouth, vision problems, allergic reactions, abnormal blood counts, nausea, vomiting, liver problems, and endocrine problems are side effects associated with Aventyl; however, patients may experience other side effects as well.
