What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Auryxia (Ferric Citrate) is a phosphate binder and iron replacement product. It works by binding to the phosphate in the digestive tract and then excreting it in the stool. This helps manage phosphorus levels in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Ferric citrate also helps treat iron deficiency anemia by increasing iron levels in the blood.

Directions

Auryxia is taken orally. The starting dosage is one or two pills three times a day, taken with meals. The dosage will depend on the condition being treated. The maximum daily dosage is 12 tablets. Swallow the tablets whole; do not chew or crush them, as doing so may cause mouth and teeth discoloration.

Ingredients

Ferric Citrate is the active ingredient in Auryxia.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Iron overload syndromes (e.g., hemochromatosis)
  • Allergy to Ferric Citrate or any other ingredient in Auryxia
  • Pre-existing conditions that could cause complications with iron regulation

Taking Auryxia with existing conditions or allergies can lead to serious health risks. Always consult your healthcare provider before starting any new medication.

Cautions

  • Before initiating treatment with Auryxia, make sure to disclose the following to your healthcare provider:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A complete list of medications you are currently using
    • Your status regarding pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Taking Auryxia can lead to high iron levels. Before starting Auryxia and during treatment, your doctor will check your iron levels, such as serum ferritin and transferrin saturation, to manage any excess.
  • Keep Auryxia out of reach of children. Iron-containing products like Auryxia, when ingested accidentally by children under 6, can lead to severe, even fatal, poisoning.

Side Effects

Auryxia, while effective, does come with some potential side effects. Common issues include diarrhea, stool discoloration, nausea, constipation, vomiting, and occasional coughing. These side effects are generally mild but can cause discomfort.

In rare cases, Auryxia may cause more severe health problems, such as increased potassium levels, which could affect heart function. In addition, some people may experience severe gastrointestinal distress that could require discontinuing the medication. If you encounter serious symptoms such as intense stomach pain or persistent issues with digestion, seek medical attention.
