What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Androcur (Cyproterone Acetate) is a medicine that helps block the effects of certain hormones called androgens, like testosterone. Therefore, it can help control conditions that are caused by too much of these hormones. In men, Androcur may be prescribed to treat advanced prostate cancer and reduce abnormal sex drive. It can also help women who have symptoms caused by high levels of male hormones. For example, it may help with excessive hair growth and severe acne in women.

Directions

Androcur is typically administered by mouth. The usual dosage of the tablets is 200 to 300 mg per day, often divided into 2 to 3 doses and taken with liquid after meals. The maximum daily dose is 300 mg. After orchiectomy (surgical removal of the testes), doctors usually recommend a lower daily dose of 2 to 4 tablets (100–200 mg) per day. It’s important to take the correct tablet strength based on their prescribed dosage. Always follow the healthcare provider's instructions closely.

Ingredients

Androcur contains the active ingredient Cyproterone Acetate.

Any existing health conditions

Any allergies

A list of all medications you are currently taking

Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding

Your doctor will review your medical history and may perform blood tests and physical exams before prescribing Androcur. Women will need a gynecological checkup, including a pregnancy test, to make sure it’s safe to start treatment.

Do not take Androcur if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It should also be avoided by children and teens who haven’t finished puberty, as it can affect growth and hormone development.

Blood clots, including deep vein clots or clots in the lungs, have been reported in some patients taking Androcur. This risk may be higher if you’ve had clots before or have other medical conditions like sickle cell anemia, diabetes with complications, or advanced cancer.

If you’re also taking a combined birth control pill, light spotting can sometimes occur. Keep taking your pills as prescribed, but check with your doctor if the bleeding is heavy or lasts longer than expected.

Androcur may be used to lower sex drive in certain conditions. Drinking alcohol may reduce this effect, so avoid alcohol if you are being treated for this reason.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Androcur are related to hormone changes and often improve after stopping or lowering the dose. These may include decreased sex drive, enlarged or tender breasts, and sexual dysfunction in men. Some people may also experience fatigue, hot flashes, or weight changes during treatment. Long-term use may lead to weakened bones (osteoporosis).

More serious side effects can include liver damage, blood clots, or meningiomas (a type of brain tumor), especially with long-term use. Rare side effects may affect the heart, lungs, or mood, including depression, breathing problems, or stroke-like symptoms. If you experience symptoms like severe fatigue, jaundice, unusual bleeding, or sudden vision changes, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
