Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Amoxicillin with potassium clavulanate is a combination antibiotic used to treat many types of bacterial infections. It pairs amoxicillin, which kills bacteria by stopping them from building protective cell walls, with clavulanate, which keeps the antibiotic from being broken down by resistant bacteria. This combination makes the medicine effective against a broader range of infections, including those that might not respond to amoxicillin alone. It’s typically available as a chewable tablet for dogs and cats.
For dogs and cats, the usual dosage depends on body weight. The tablets come in different strengths, and a veterinarian may combine them to match your dog’s weight. Tablets should stay in their foil pack until use, and even if a tablet breaks, the full piece should be given.
Treatment length depends on the type of infection. Skin and soft tissue infections, like abscesses or wounds, are typically treated for 5–7 days, or for 48 hours after symptoms clear. Deeper skin infections may require up to 21 days, but treatment should never exceed 30 days. If there’s no improvement within a few days, treatment may need to be stopped and reevaluated by a veterinarian.
Amoxicillin and clavulanate are the active ingredients in these tablets.
Avoid giving this medication in animals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to any penicillins or cephalosporins.
Mild side effects of amoxicillin and clavulanate in dogs and cats may include loss of appetite, tiredness, vomiting, or diarrhea. These reactions are among the most commonly reported and are generally manageable, but owners should keep an eye on their pet’s condition during treatment.
More serious adverse effects are possible, especially allergic reactions since the drug contains a penicillin. In rare cases, pets may experience significant hypersensitivity requiring emergency treatment such as epinephrine or steroids. If your pet shows signs of severe reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling, or sudden collapse, contact your veterinarian immediately.
