What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Allerject is an Epinephrine auto-injector classified as a sympathomimetic drug used as an emergency treatment for severe allergic reactions, also known as anaphylaxis. This medication works by rapidly stimulating alpha and beta-adrenergic receptors, which helps to relax the muscles in the airways and tighten blood vessels. Designed for individuals at risk of anaphylactic reactions, Allerject can reverse potential life-threatening symptoms such as wheezing, swelling, and severe skin itching. It is also used to help improve severely low blood pressure during anaphylactic shock.

Directions

When using Allerject, it's important to act quickly in the event of an allergic emergency. Here are the steps: Firstly, make sure to hold the auto-injector firmly and remove the blue safety cap. Secondly, position the device against the outer thigh, even through clothing if necessary. Press the injector firmly against the thigh to deploy the needle and administer the medicine. You should hold it in place for three seconds to ensure the full dose is delivered.

The standard dosages usually are 0.3 mg for adults and children weighing more than 30 kg, and 0.15 mg for children weighing 15 to 30 kg. Users should remain alert to any signs of worsening symptoms and seek immediate medical attention after using Allerject. It's also advisable to carry two injections at all times, as a second dose may be required for severe reactions.

Ingredients

Allerject contains the active ingredient Epinephrine.

Contraindications

The Allerject label does not list any contraindications. Nonetheless, individuals who have previously experienced hypersensitivity reactions to Epinephrine or any components of the formulation should avoid using it.

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Allerject, be sure to inform your healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any medical conditions you currently have
    • Any allergies
    • All medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Always carry Allerject if you have a history of anaphylaxis, and wear medical identification that notes your condition.
  • Allerject is not a substitute for medical care; seek immediate medical help after using it for severe allergic reactions.
  • Do not use antihistamines or asthma medications as the first treatment for an anaphylactic reaction.
  • After using Allerject due to an anaphylactic episode, get a new prescription as soon as possible.
  • Allerject should only be injected into the front of the thigh. Injecting into other areas like the buttocks or hands can lead to serious problems, including infections or reduced blood flow.
  • If you accidentally inject Allerject into the hands, feet, or buttocks, go immediately to the emergency room.
  • Hold the leg still during injection to prevent injury, especially when administering to young children.
  • Watch for signs of infection at the injection site, such as redness or warmth, and seek medical care if these symptoms occur.
  • Do not inject Allerject into the buttock to avoid the risk of a rare but serious infection.
  • Use Allerject with caution if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or asthma, and discuss these conditions with your healthcare provider.
  • If you're sensitive to sulfites, be aware that Allerject contains sodium metabisulfite, which can cause allergic reactions. However, in a life-threatening situation, the benefits of using Epinephrine outweigh the risks.

Side Effects

The administration of Allerject can lead to several side effects. Common reactions include moderate anxiety, feelings of overstimulation, restlessness, tremors, weakness, dizziness, sweating, rapid heartbeat (tachycardia), palpitations, skin paleness, nausea, vomiting, headache, and respiratory difficulties. These symptoms are usually temporary and tend to subside quickly.

Severe complications can include irregular heartbeats, stress-related heart muscle issues (more common in women), high blood pressure, bleeding in the brain, and rare but dangerous conditions like abnormal heart rhythms and severe tissue infection at the injection spot. It's important to look out for signs of infection at the injection site, such as ongoing redness or swelling, which could indicate a serious skin infection. Despite these risks, using Allerject for life-threatening allergic reactions is important, as its benefits usually outweigh the potential dangers.
