What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Accrufer, known scientifically as Ferric Maltol, is a medication used to manage iron deficiency in adults. Ferric Maltol works by supplying iron in a stable ferric form, which the body can readily use, especially when a person's iron stores are depleted. As an oral iron therapy, its unique formula allows for iron to be absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract. Doctors typically prescribe Accrufer to treat conditions like iron deficiency anemia, where the body lacks enough healthy red blood cells due to insufficient iron levels.

Directions

Accrufer should be taken orally. The standard dosage is one 30 mg capsule taken twice daily on an empty stomach. Individuals should swallow the capsules whole, without chewing, breaking, or opening them. It's important for users to continue taking Accrufer for as long as it's prescribed, even if they feel better after a short period. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's nearly time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose—taking two doses at the same time is not advisable.

Ingredients

Ferric Maltol is the active ingredient in Accrufer.

Contraindications

If you fall under any of the categories listed below, you may need to avoid this medication:

  • History of hypersensitivity to the active substance Ferric Maltol or to any of the excipients used in the formulation.
  • Patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to other oral iron products might also react to Accrufer.
  • Iron overload syndromes, like hemochromatosis, indicate that your body already has too much iron, making the additional iron from Accrufer unsafe.
  • Receiving multiple blood transfusions in a short period can lead to adequate or high iron levels, making extra iron supplements either unnecessary or potentially harmful.

Cautions

  • Before using Accrufer, ensure you provide your healthcare provider with the following information:
    • Existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A list of all the medications you are currently taking
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Avoid using Accrufer if you currently have an inflammatory bowel disease flare-up. It could increase your gastrointestinal inflammation.
  • Be cautious with Accrufer if there’s a risk of iron overload. This medication can cause excess iron storage, which may lead to harmful conditions like hemosiderosis. Do not use Accrufer if you have high iron levels or are receiving intravenous iron treatments.
  • Regularly monitor your iron levels both before and during treatment with Accrufer to ensure they remain within a safe range.
  • Keep Accrufer out of children’s reach, as iron-containing products can be extremely toxic if ingested by children. In case of accidental overdose, contact a doctor or poison control center immediately.

Side Effects

Accrufer may cause digestive side effects. Most commonly, you might experience gas, diarrhea, or constipation. Other frequent side effects include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and discolored stools. These side effects are generally mild and tend to decrease as your body adapts to the treatment.

While taking Accrufer, some people may face significant health risks. If you have inflammatory bowel disease, it's important to avoid Accrufer during a flare-up due to the increased risk of worsening the condition. Another serious concern is iron overload, which requires regular monitoring of your blood iron levels by your healthcare provider. Accidental ingestion by children can lead to a fatal overdose, so it’s crucial to store Accrufer safely away from children. Contact your doctor immediately if you experience any severe or concerning symptoms.
