What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

HUMALOG 75/25 is an insulin product prescribed to treat types 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus.

People with diabetes cannot regulate their blood sugar because they do not produce enough insulin, or the insulin they have is not effective enough.

Directions

Take HUMALOG Mix 75/25 exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your individual characteristics.

Your doctor may have you take a fixed amount of insulin or may have you change the dosage based on your blood sugar readings.

Ingredients

HUMALOG Mix 75/25 is an insulin mixture that contains insulin lispro and lispro protamine suspension.

Insulin lispro is a rapid-acting insulin that begins working after about 15 minutes.

Insulin lispro protamine is an intermediate-acting insulin that begins working in about 1 hour and lasts for about 12 hours.

The mixture of insulin in HUMALOG 75/25 provides a two-phased approach to managing blood sugar. The rapid-acting insulin provides coverage for meal-time glucose, and the intermediate-acting insulin provides coverage for the rest of the day. Taken appropriately, HUMALOG Mix 75/25 can provide around-the-clock coverage.

Interactions

Insulin products do not have the same time of drug interactions that other medications do. When a drug interacts with insulin, it is because it affects the level of glucose in the blood. By changing blood glucose, you may need more or less insulin to stay in range.

  • Blood pressure medications
  • Corticosteroids
  • Estrogens
  • Isoniazid
  • Mono-amine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
  • Niacin
  • Oral antidiabetic agents
  • Oral contraceptives
  • Phenothiazines
  • Salicylates
  • Sulfa antibiotics
  • Thyroid replacement medication

Cautions

Tell your doctor if you have a history of kidney or liver problems.

Using insulin products increases the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). It is important to become familiar with the symptoms of hypoglycemia if you will be using insulin.

Side Effects

Common side effects of HUMALOG 75/25 may include:

  • Allergic reactions
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Injection site reactions
