What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Roszet is a two-drug combination: rosuvastatin, an HMG CoA-reductase inhibitor (statin) and ezetimibe, a dietary cholesterol absorption inhibitor.

Roszet (rosuvastatin and ezetimibe) is used:

  • With diet to reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in adults with primary non-familial hyperlipidemia
  • alone or with other medications that lower LDL-C in adults with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH)

Directions

Roszet is supplied as an oral tablet in the following strengths:

  • 5 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe
  • 10 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe
  • 20 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe
  • 40 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe

Avoid crushing, chewing, or dissolving the tablets. They should be swallowed whole. 

If you are taking a bile acid sequestrant, Roszet should be taken 2 hours before or 4 hours after taking the bile acid sequestrant. 

If you are taking an antacid that contains aluminum and magnesium hydroxide, Roszet should be taken at least 2 hours before taking the antacid.

Your dose will depend on the reason for taking Roszet, LDL-C, and your risks for cardiovascular events. 

Dosage range: 5 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe to 40 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe by mouth once a day. 

Your doctor may adjust your dose depending on LDL-C levels.

The recommended starting dose in Asian patients is 5 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe by mouth once a day.

The recommended starting dose in patients with severe kidney problems who are not on hemodialysis is 5 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe by mouth once a day. The dose should not be more than 10 mg rosuvastatin/10 mg ezetimibe per day. 

Ingredients

Rosuvastatin and ezetimibe are the active ingredients in Roszet.

Contraindications

Avoid taking Roszet if you have liver failure or decompensated liver cirrhosis. 

Avoid taking Roszet if you are allergic to rosuvastatin, ezetimibe, or any of its other ingredients.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Roszet, inform your doctor:
    • of all the medications you take-prescription, over-the-counter, vitamins, and herbal supplements 
    • Of your allergies
    • Of your medical conditions
    • If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant
    • If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed
  • Myopathy can occur with the use of Roszet. If you are 65 years old or older, have uncontrolled hypothyroidism, have kidney problems, take certain other medications for cholesterol, or take a higher Roszet dose, you may be at an increased risk. Asian patients who are being treated with Roszet may be at a higher risk. Rhabdomyolysis that can lead to acute kidney damage or death can also occur with the use of Roszet. Immediately contact your doctor if you experience a fever, muscle pain, tenderness, weakness.
  • Liver problems can occur with the use of Roszet. Avoid taking Roszet if you have liver failure or decompensated liver cirrhosis. If you have a history of liver disease and/or you consume considerable amounts of alcohol, your risk may be higher.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Roszet include common cold, muscle pain, joint pain, back pain, diarrhea, fatigue, pain in extremity, influenza, and upper respiratory tract infection. 

These may not be all the possible side effects of Roszet. Immediately let your doctor know if you develop worrisome or continuous side effects.
