What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Dristan is an inhaled nasal decongestant that temporarily relieves congestion caused by allergies, sinusitis, or the common cold. Your doctor may recommend or prescribe Dristan if you have congestion caused by allergies or infections.

Dristan belongs to the class of medications called alpha-adrenergic agonists, which narrow the blood vessels in the nasal passages, thereby reducing swelling and congestion by reducing the blood flow to nasal passages.

Directions

Before using Dristan, gently shake the bottle and remove the protective cap. Hold the bottle upright and insert the nozzle into one nostril while closing the other with your finger. Firmly press down on the spray pump to release the medication, all while inhaling gently through your nose.

Repeat the process for the other nostril if needed. Ask your doctor how long to take this medication because it can cause rebound congestion. Do not take it for longer than directed.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Dristan is oxymetazoline.

Interactions

Common drug-drug interactions with Dristan may include:

  • Bromocriptine
  • Cocaine (Topical)
  • Ergot derivatives
  • Esketamine
  • Isocarboxazid
  • Kratom
  • Linezolid
  • Lisuride
  • Phenelzine
  • Rasagiline
  • Selegiline
  • Tranylcypromine

Cautions

If your nasal congestion does not improve or worsens after several days of using oxymetazoline, consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation and guidance.

Take Distran exactly as directed. Using nasal decongestants excessively or for an extended period can lead to a condition known as rebound congestion, where your nasal passages become more congested after stopping the medication.

Dristan is only for use in sinus passages. Do not use Dristan in the eyes, ears, or other mucus membranes.
