What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Description

Atacand (candesartan cilexetil) is available by prescription only to treat patients who are one year of age and older with high blood pressure. It is also used for the treatment of heart failure and to decrease hospitalization caused by heart failure as well as decrease the risk of death caused by cardiovascular disorders.

Atacand comes in tablets of 4 mg, 8 mg, 16 mg, and 32 mg strengths for oral administration.

Take Atacand as instructed by your doctor. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist about any questions or concerns you may have about the medication.

Age and the condition being treated determines each patient’s Atacand dosage. Your doctor will tell you how much is right for you.

Ingredients

Candesartan cilexetil, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB), is the active ingredient in Atacand. Inactive ingredients in each tablet include hydroxypropyl cellulose, polyethylene glycol, lactose, corn starch, carboxymethylcellulose calcium, and magnesium stearate. The 8 mg, 16 mg, and 32 mg tablets also contain ferric oxide as a colorant.

Contraindications

Do not take Atacand if you are allergic to candesartan or to any of the other ingredients in the medication.

If you have diabetes, do not take Atacand with aliskiren.

Cautions

Atacand has an FDA Boxed Warning against its use in pregnancy. Atacand should be stopped as soon as possible once pregnancy is detected. Atacand can cause harm and death to an unborn baby.

  • Before you begin treatment with Atacand, the following should be discussed with your doctor:
    • All the medications you take.
    • Your allergies.
    • Your current health problems and past medical history.
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Low blood pressure can occur with the use of Atacand; therefore, blood pressure should be regularly monitored.
  • Kidney function can decline with the use of Atacand.
  • Potassium levels in the blood can increase with the use of Atacand.

Side Effects

Headache, dizziness, low blood pressure, impaired kidney function, and high potassium levels in the blood are common side effects associated with Atacand. Other side effects can occur, so contact your doctor immediately if you develop side effects that bother you or won’t go away.
